The first ever Alice in Wonderland film (1903)!

The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.

With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years.

Music: 'Jill in the Box', composed and performed by Wendy Hiscocks.

DIY Bread & Butterfly

Observe the Bread-and-Butterfly....

(source)
It's wings are thin slices of bread-and-butter, it's body a crust, and it's head is a lump of sugar. What does it live on you ask? Why, weak tea with cream in it of course!

Like I mentioned yesterday, I have a Wonderland inspired craft to share in honor of Tim Burton's movie coming to theaters this Friday. I decided to make up my own little tutorial on how to make a felt Bread & Butterfly.

Click Here to see the full tutorial and download the template.

This is the first (of hopefully many) craft tutorials I plan to post here on the Camp Smartypants blog. So let me know what you think! And if you have any questions or comments, be sure to contact me. I'd love to see your results if you decide to make one too :)

Inspiration Wednesday

Just because the much anticipated movie comes out this Friday, here is some lovely Alice in Wonderland inspiration ♥

Artist of the Day: Rima Staines

Rima Staines of The Hermitage is my featured artist today. I've been following her work and her blog for about a year now. She is an amazing story teller both with her words and her art. Each piece she creates has so much soul and history worked into it. I highly recommend checking our her blog where she records her traveling adventures. Her message of welcome when you arrive there sets the tone of the artist and her enchanting life:

Welcome Travellers... If you are weary, be cheered, for your road is nearing its end. Follow the sign to the Hermitage. A phantasmagoria of fancy, a museum of myth, realm of the ridiculous and online home of Rima Staines, illustrator, painter, maker of things and teller of tales...

I almost forgot!

I almost forgot to mention that I got accepted into Crafty Wonderland's 2010 Super Colossal Spring Sale! It's all happening May 1st- 2nd at the Oregon Convention Center. I'm so excited!!

Weekend Adventures & Vintage Finds

Happy Monday everyone! It seems so weird that March is here already. I thought I'd share with you what I was up to this past weekend.

Friday...

I went to the I Heart Art Portland Meet 'n' Greet held at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in NW Portland. It was so much fun! Over 500 people showed up. There were food and drinks and even a few people from Etsy Headquarters were there. It was really great having the opportunity to mingle and talk with other Portland etsians and creatives. They also had little activity stations set up where you could make your own button and print your own gocco card. Fun fun!

Saturday...

I saw my favorite local band, Purple Rhinestone Eagle, play at The Know bar on NE Alberta. They are so amazing to see perform. I can't wait for their next album to come out. They start recording this spring!

Sunday...

My mom and I did some quick thrifty shopping. We stopped at 3 of our favorite thrift/antique stores: Atomic Ashes, Rerun and another thrift store I unfortunately don't remember the name of (it's located on the corner of NE Killingsworth and Williams). I ended up falling in love with the color orange and daringly bought these bright orange leather shoes, a cute daisy mug, and a little vintage framed mushroom art ♥
